    Join us for Kwibuka25 / The 25th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda

    Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 8 March 2019 – The Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Ethiopia, and Permanent Mission to the African Union (AU) and to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in collaboration with partners, is organizing a series of events as part of the global program for the 25th Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda - Kwibuka25. The theme for this year’s commemoration is Remember-Unite-Renew.

    Key events and activities for this year’s Kwibuka25 program include: 

    • A Symposium jointly organized by the African Union Commission, Department of Political Affairs (AUC-DPA), the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), Addis Ababa University. The symposium is titled “Preserving Memory-Upholding Humanity” and will take place on the 25 March 2019 at the African Union Commission (AUC), Medium Conference Hall from 09:00 to 13:00;
    • AU’s Annual Day of Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda: on the 7 April 2019 at the AU Headquarters;
    • A Walk to Remember jointly organized with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) on the 13th April 2019 in the City of Addis Ababa;
    • A lecture at the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) on the 15th March 2019 at the Addis Ababa University;
    • An Open Session of the AU’s Peace and Security Council on prevention of the ideology of hate, Genocide and hate crimes in Africa: April 2019;
    • A Commemoration event in Djibouti jointly organized with the Government of Djibouti:  on the 10th April 2019;
    • Kwibuka25 Exhibition: 7-13 April 2019 at the AUC;

    The purpose of the annual commemoration/Kwibuka is to remember and honor those who lost their lives, comfort those who survived and pay tribute to the sacrifices that brought Rwanda back to life. It is also a time to reflect on the transformational journey of healing, national reconstruction, reconciliation, and growth that Rwanda has been on since 1994. It is particularly a time to raise greater awareness about the value of life and humanity.
